Last-Minute Move? How to Book Removals at Short Notice

Needing last minute removals is more common than people think. A completion date gets brought forward, a tenancy ends sooner than planned, a new job starts next week, or the removal company you booked cancels the day before. Whatever the reason, you have days or even hours to organise something that normally takes weeks.

The good news is that short-notice moves happen all the time, and most of them go smoothly when you focus on the right things in the right order. This guide covers what to do in the first hour, action plans for 24 hours, 48 hours and one week, how to pack fast, and what to do if your mover lets you down. It is based on over 20 years of urgent and planned moves across St Albans, Hertfordshire and London.

Quick answer Phone removal companies directly rather than using online forms, with both addresses, your date and a rough list of what you are moving ready. Be flexible on the start time, get a fixed written quote, and confirm the booking before you start packing. Pack an essentials box first, then work from the rooms you use least. If the move is small, a man and van can often be booked for the same or next day.

1. Can you really book removals at short notice?

Usually, yes. How easy it is depends on three things:

  • The size of the move. A flat or a few rooms can often be fitted in the same or next day. A large family home needs more crew and a bigger van, so give as much notice as you can.
  • The day. Midweek dates are usually easier to find than Fridays, weekends and the last days of the month.
  • Your flexibility. If you can move early in the morning or later in the afternoon, you open up slots that a fixed 9am start would not.

Removal companies that work 24/7 have more room to fit urgent jobs in, because they are not limited to office hours.

2. What should you do in the first hour?

The first hour is about securing a van and a crew. Everything else can follow.

  1. Pick up the phone. Online forms and email are too slow when time is short. A call gets you a yes or no straight away.
  2. Have your details ready. Both addresses, the date, the property size and anything large or awkward. The table in Section 3 lists what to have to hand.
  3. Send a quick video. A walk-round video or photos on WhatsApp lets the company quote accurately without a visit.
  4. Be clear about what you need. Just transport, or packing, dismantling and storage as well.
  5. Get a fixed quote in writing. Even a WhatsApp message or email confirming the price and what is included is far better than a verbal agreement.
  6. Confirm, then start packing. Once the booking is confirmed, you know your deadline and can plan backwards from it.

For more on how quotes are worked out, see our guide to what happens during a removal survey.

3. What details should you have ready when you call?

DetailWhy the removal company needs it
Both full addresses with postcodesTo plan the route, timing and any parking or access issues
Moving date and earliest start timeTo check which crew and van are free
Property type and number of bedroomsTo estimate volume, van size and crew size
Floor level and lift access at both endsStairs and lifts affect time and crew numbers
Parking outside each propertyLong carries and permit zones add time
Large, heavy or fragile itemsWardrobes, pianos, mirrors or antiques may need extra hands
Whether you need packingPacking needs its own crew time, sometimes the day before
Whether you need storageIf you have nowhere to move to yet, storage becomes part of the job

4. What should your plan look like: 24 hours, 48 hours or a week?

If you are moving within 24 hours

  • Book the van and crew first; nothing else matters until that is confirmed.
  • Pack an essentials box: documents, medication, chargers, keys, toiletries, a change of clothes and a kettle.
  • Pack clothes straight into suitcases, bags and bin bags. Don’t fold, just fill.
  • Leave anything you can’t pack to the crew, or book professional packers.
  • Take meter readings and photos before you leave.

If you are moving within 48 hours

  • Book removals, and packing if needed, on day one.
  • Get boxes and tape the same day. Many removal companies can deliver them.
  • Pack the rooms you use least first: loft, spare room, dining room.
  • Defrost the freezer the day before and use up or give away frozen food.
  • Tell your energy and water suppliers, and set up post redirection.

If you are moving within a week

  • Book removals in the first day or two, while there is still choice.
  • Declutter as you go, but only big items you definitely don’t want. There isn’t time for sorting.
  • Pack a few boxes every evening, room by room.
  • Arrange broadband, council tax and insurance at the new address.
  • Confirm access, parking and key collection at the new property.

5. How do you pack a house fast?

Speed comes from not making decisions. Pack now, sort later.

  • Work room by room, least used first. Keep the kitchen and bedrooms until last because you still need them.
  • Use what you already have. Suitcases, laundry baskets, holdalls and bags all count as containers.
  • Use soft items as padding. Towels, bedding and clothes protect fragile items and save on bubble wrap.
  • Label with the room only. On a short-notice move, ‘Kitchen’ or ‘Bedroom 2’ is enough.
  • Leave the hard jobs to the crew. Dismantling beds and wardrobes is faster with the right tools and experience.

If there simply isn’t time, our packing and unpacking service can pack the whole home or just the kitchen and fragile items, which take the longest.

6. What makes a last-minute move harder, and how do you get round it?

ProblemHow to deal with it
Permit or restricted parkingSome councils need several days’ notice for a parking suspension. If it’s too late, ask neighbours about driveway space, and warn the crew so they can plan the carry
Building with a lift or loading bayCall the building manager straight away to book the lift or loading time
Keys not ready at the new propertyAgree a key collection time in writing with the agent or landlord; if keys may be late, ask about storage
Nowhere to move to yetPut belongings into storage and stay with family or in temporary accommodation
Large items that may not fitTell the removal company up front so they can bring the right tools and crew
Buying and completion brought forwardCompletion only happens on working days; check the time with your conveyancer and plan around key release

7. Man and van or full removal team for a last-minute move?

At short notice, the right choice usually comes down to the size of the move.

 Man and vanFull removal team
Best forStudio or one-bedroom flat, single items, student movesTwo bedrooms or more, or anything with a lot of heavy furniture
Short-notice availabilityOften easier to book same or next dayNeeds more crew, so give as much notice as possible
PackingUsually you packPacking can be added
Speed on the dayFine for small loadsFaster for large loads because there are more hands

8. What should you do if your removal company lets you down?

A cancellation or no-show the day before is one of the most common reasons people need last-minute removals. If it happens to you:

  1. Stop waiting. If the crew is more than an hour late and not answering, start calling other companies straight away.
  2. Get it in writing. Ask the original company to confirm the cancellation by text or email; you may need it for a refund.
  3. Call, don’t email. Explain the situation and send photos or a video so a new company can quote quickly.
  4. Tell your solicitor or landlord. If you have a completion or tenancy deadline, they need to know early.
  5. Consider storage as a fallback. If the move can’t happen the same day, storage can take your belongings while the rest is sorted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I book a removal company for tomorrow?

Often, yes, depending on availability. Smaller moves, midweek dates and flexible start times are the easiest to fit in at short notice. Call rather than filling in an online form, and have both addresses and a rough list of what you are moving ready.

Do last-minute removals cost more?

They can, because short-notice bookings depend on which vans and crews are free, and some dates are in high demand. Being flexible on the start time or the day often helps. Always get a fixed, written quote before you confirm.

What is the quickest way to get a removal quote?

Phone the removal company directly, or send a short video or photos of each room on WhatsApp. Both are much faster than waiting for a home visit, and a video walk-round is usually accurate enough for a reliable quote.

Can I move at the weekend at short notice?

Many removal companies work weekends, and Shaheen Express Removals is available 24/7. If you are buying, though, remember that completion itself only happens on working days, so you cannot usually collect keys to a purchased home on a Saturday or Sunday.

What if I have to move out but have nowhere to move to yet?

Your belongings can go into storage while you stay with family, friends or in temporary accommodation. Ask your removal company whether they can collect, store and later deliver your belongings, so one team handles the whole thing.

How do I pack a house in one day?

Pack an essentials box first, then work room by room starting with the rooms you use least. Use suitcases and bags for clothes and soft items, and don’t sort or declutter as you go. If time is too tight, book a professional packing team to do it for you.
