Parking Suspensions for Removals in St Albans: How to Reserve Space Outside Your Home

For many moves near St Albans city centre, the hardest part of the day is finding somewhere for the removal van to stop. If you live on a street with residents’ bays, a parking suspension St Albans City and District Council approves can reserve space outside your home so the vehicle parks right by your front door.

This guide explains when you need one, how to apply and the details that catch people out on moving day.

What Is a Parking Suspension?

A parking suspension temporarily lifts the normal parking rules on a section of road and reserves it for a specific vehicle. In St Albans, suspensions are managed by St Albans City and District Council, and for a move it means the bays outside your home are held for your removal vehicle.

Without one, the vehicle may have to park further away, which makes every carry longer and the day slower.

Do You Need One for Your St Albans Move?

Suspensions only apply in controlled parking areas, such as streets with residents’ permit bays. Many roads around the city centre and St Albans City station fall into controlled zones, while many suburban streets in areas such as Marshalswick, Jersey Farm and Chiswell Green do not. The council’s guidance says suspensions cannot be considered in areas that are not controlled.

As a rule of thumb:

  • Controlled street with permit bays: a suspension is usually the best way to keep space free for the vehicle.
  • Uncontrolled street with no permit bays: a suspension is not available, so plan parking with your neighbours and your removal company instead.
  • Home with a driveway: check the driveway is long and wide enough for the vehicle, and that it can turn or reverse safely.

How to Apply for a Parking Suspension in St Albans

Applications are made online through the council’s parking permit system. The process at the time of writing is:

  • Create a permit account on the council’s online permit system.
  • Log in and apply for a suspension, giving the location, dates and number of bays you need.
  • Register the vehicle that will use the space. Vehicles must be registered to the suspension, so ask your removal company for the vehicle registration in advance.
  • Wait for confirmation. The permit is only valid once it has been issued and you receive the confirmation email. An application on its own does not cover the vehicle.

Check the St Albans City and District Council website before you apply, as processes and requirements can change.

How Far Ahead Should You Apply?

The council asks for applications at least 10 days before the suspension starts. If you need to change the details of a suspension sign that is already on the street, that has to be done at least 4 days before the start date, and requests made after 3pm are treated as the next working day.

Moving dates often change when you are buying or selling, so apply as soon as your date is confirmed and note the deadline for changes.

What a Suspension Does Not Do

A suspension reserves the space, but it does not guarantee it will be empty when the van arrives. The council does not supply cones or barriers, and it cannot remove a car that is parked in a suspended bay, although it can issue a penalty charge notice. If a vehicle is parked in your bay on moving day, you can report it to the council’s parking enforcement team.

Let your neighbours know the date and times, and keep your confirmation email on your phone in case anyone asks about the reserved bays.

Suspending More Than Three Spaces

Most house moves need one or two bays. If a suspension affects more than three car spaces, the council requires a letter drop to local residents, so allow extra time.

If Your Street Is Not Controlled

On uncontrolled streets, good planning does the job of a suspension. Ask neighbours to leave space outside your home, start early and tell your removal company about narrow roads or steep driveways. In many places, vehicles may stop briefly on yellow lines to load and unload unless loading restrictions apply, which are usually shown by short marks on the kerb and nearby signs. Always check the signs on your own street.

If you live close to St Peter’s Street, remember that the city centre is busiest on Wednesday and Saturday market days. A weekday that avoids the market usually makes for an easier move.
