Greenhouses aren’t built with moving in mind. Glass panels, delicate frames, and connections that have often sat untouched for years all make dismantling a greenhouse a genuinely different task from packing up standard garden furniture. Before you start: safety first
Wear thick gloves and safety glasses throughout, since broken or chipped glass is the most common injury risk during greenhouse dismantling. Step 1: Remove the glass panels first
Start from the top of the greenhouse and work downward, removing glass panels one at a time before touching the frame itself. Most greenhouse glazing sits in clips or channels rather than being permanently fixed, so gently sliding or lifting panels out, rather than forcing them, avoids unnecessary cracks. Wrap each pane individually as it comes out, using cardboard or bubble wrap, and stack them vertically rather than flat.
Step 2: Label the frame sections as you go
Before removing any frame components, take photographs of the structure from multiple angles. As you dismantle each section, label the pieces clearly, ideally with tape and a marker noting where each piece connects, since greenhouse frames often look deceptively similar once separated and reassembly becomes far harder without this reference.
Step 3: Dismantle the frame methodically
Work section by section rather than trying to take the whole structure apart at once. Most greenhouse frames are held together with bolts, screws, or specific locking mechanisms depending on the manufacturer. Keep all fixings together in a labelled bag for each section, rather than combining them into one general container where they’ll inevitably get mixed up.
Step 4: Handle the base and foundation
Depending on how your greenhouse was originally installed, the base may be bolted to a concrete foundation, sitting on paving slabs, or staked into soil. Take note of how it was originally secured, since this affects how you’ll need to reinstall it at a new property, and factor removal of the base into your overall timeline rather than treating it as an afterthought.
Common mistakes that cause damage
Rushing the glass removal is the most frequent cause of breakage. Forcing stuck panels rather than gently working them loose is a close second. Not labelling frame sections leads to a frustrating reassembly process later, sometimes with pieces that never quite fit back together the way they did originally.
