Moving day is done, the boxes are in, and now comes the part nobody plans for properly: working out what you actually need to buy for your new house. It’s easy to focus all your energy on packing and forget that your new home needs restocking almost from scratch, especially if you’ve downsized, moved out of a shared house, or left furnished accommodation.
This checklist covers the essentials most people forget until they need them, split by room, so you can shop in one trip instead of five.
Kitchen Essentials
The kitchen is usually the biggest gap, especially if you’re moving into your first place or replacing items that didn’t make the move with you.
- Kettle, toaster, and microwave
- Pots, pans, and a baking tray
- Cutlery set and everyday plates, bowls, and mugs
- Sharp knife and chopping board
- Tea towels and oven gloves
- Bin and bin bags
- Basic food storage containers
- Washing up liquid, sponge, and a dish rack
- Fridge and cupboard staples: tea, coffee, milk, bread, and a few tins to tide you over the first couple of days
Cleaning Supplies
Whatever the previous occupants left behind, you’ll want your own basics from day one.
- All purpose cleaner and a bathroom specific cleaner
- Mop, bucket, and broom
- Vacuum cleaner
- Cloths and sponges
- Rubber gloves
- Toilet brush
- Laundry detergent
Bathroom Essentials
- Toilet roll, more than you think you need
- Shower curtain or screen, if not already fitted
- Bath mat
- Towels, hand and bath size
- Soap dispenser or basic toiletries
- A small bin for the bathroom
Bedroom and Living Room Basics
- Bedding: sheets, duvet, and pillows for every bed
- Curtains or blinds, and the fittings to hang them if the previous owner took theirs
- Lightbulbs, it’s common for these to be missing entirely
- Extension leads and adapters, especially if you’re used to a different plug layout
- Basic seating if furniture is delayed, even a couple of folding chairs helps
Safety Items
These are easy to overlook in the rush of moving day, but they matter from the first night.
- Working smoke alarms in every required room
- Carbon monoxide alarm, especially if you have gas appliances
- A basic fire extinguisher or fire blanket for the kitchen
- A first aid kit
- Torch and spare batteries, useful if you haven’t located the fuse box yet
A Few Things People Always Forget
- Spare keys cut, and know where your stopcock and fuse box are
- Doormat, small but genuinely useful from day one
- A toolbox with the basics: screwdriver, hammer, tape measure, and picture hooks
- Address label or nameplate if you need one for post or deliveries
