Storage During a Home Renovation: Moving Your Furniture Out While the Work Is Done

Renovations create dust, noise and a surprising amount of disruption. New floors, a kitchen extension, rewiring or a loft conversion often mean whole rooms have to be emptied, and sometimes the whole house. Arranging storage during renovation work protects your furniture from damage and dust, gives your builders space to work and can even make the project faster. This guide explains how to plan it.

When Do You Need Storage for a Renovation?

Not every project needs it. A single bathroom can often be done with everything left in place. Storage becomes worth considering when:

  • Floors are being replaced across several rooms.
  • You are rewiring or replastering, which creates heavy dust everywhere.
  • You are adding an extension that knocks through into existing rooms.
  • You are moving out while the work is done.
  • Builders need clear access to work efficiently and safely.

For larger renovations, using a removal company that also offers storage is often simplest, because one team packs, collects, stores and returns your belongings.

Decide What Goes and What Stays

Walk through the house with your builder’s plan and decide room by room:

  • Store: furniture from rooms being worked on, fragile items, artwork, rugs and anything you will not need for the duration.
  • Keep at home: everyday clothes, essential kitchen items, work equipment and anything you need weekly.
  • Declutter: a renovation is a good chance to sell, donate or recycle items you no longer want before they go into storage.

Packing Furniture for Storage

Pack for storage as if it might be longer than planned. Clean and dry everything first, wrap furniture in breathable covers rather than sealed plastic, dismantle beds and tables where possible and pack boxes fully so they do not crush when stacked. Label every box with its contents and the room it will return to.

Living at Home or Moving Out During the Work

Many people stay at home during a renovation and store only the contents of the rooms being worked on. This works well for smaller projects. For major work, such as a full rewire, new floors throughout or a large extension, moving out to family or a short-term rental is often easier and can let the builders work faster. If you move out, more of your furniture will need storage, so plan the volume with your removal company early.

Protecting Rooms That Stay Furnished

For any furniture left at home, cover it with dust sheets, close doors to rooms not being worked on and ask your builder to seal off the work area where possible. Move electronics and soft furnishings out of the way of the dustiest work, as fine plaster dust gets into fabrics and vents easily.

Plan for Delays

Renovations rarely finish exactly on schedule. Building materials arrive late, unexpected problems appear behind walls and weather can hold up outdoor work. When you arrange storage, ask how easy it is to extend if the project overruns, and how much notice is needed to have your belongings delivered back.

Insurance and Access

Check two things before you store anything. First, ask your home insurer whether your contents are covered while in storage, and ask the storage provider what cover they offer. Second, find out whether you can access your belongings during the project, and how much notice you need to retrieve a particular box.

Moving Back In

Wait until the dust has truly settled. Ask your builder to finish all dusty work and arrange a thorough clean before your furniture returns. Plan the layout of the renovated rooms in advance so items can be placed correctly as they come off the vehicle, rather than stacked in the hallway.
