Most of what is in your home can go on the removal vehicle, but not everything. Some items are dangerous to transport, some are not covered by insurance and some simply should not spend hours in the back of a closed vehicle. If you are wondering what can’t removal companies move, this guide lists the items most movers refuse, explains why and tells you what to do with each one before moving day.
Every company sets its own terms, so treat this as a general guide and check your mover’s list before you pack.
Why Some Items Are Refused
There are three main reasons. Hazardous items can leak, catch fire or explode in a hot, enclosed vehicle, putting the crew and your belongings at risk. Some items are excluded from the removal company’s insurance, so they cannot be covered if anything goes wrong. And some items, such as pets and plants, need care that a removal vehicle cannot provide.
Hazardous and Flammable Items
These are the items almost every removal company will refuse to load:
| Item | What to Do Instead |
| Petrol, diesel and other fuels | Use up or drain fuel from mowers and tools; take spare fuel to a recycling centre that accepts it |
| Gas bottles and cylinders | Return to the supplier, use up or take in your own vehicle where safe and permitted |
| Paint, solvents and thinners | Use up, give away or take to a recycling centre that accepts them |
| Garden chemicals and pesticides | Use up or take to a household hazardous waste point |
| Fireworks, ammunition and explosives | Never pack these; seek specialist advice on disposal |
| Bleach and strong cleaning products | Use up before the move or carry small sealed amounts yourself |
| Aerosols | Use up or check your mover’s policy, as many refuse them |
Start using up chemicals, paint and cleaning products a few weeks before you move. It is far easier than trying to dispose of full containers in the last few days.
Items You Should Keep With You
Some items can technically go on the vehicle but are usually excluded from cover, or are simply too important to let out of your sight:
- Cash, jewellery and watches.
- Passports, birth certificates and property documents.
- Medication for everyone in the household.
- Laptops, hard drives and phones containing work or personal data.
- Keys for the old and new home, cars and storage.
- Irreplaceable sentimental items, such as small heirlooms and photographs.
Pack these in a bag or box that travels with you in the car.
Check the Garage and Shed Early
Most hazardous items live in the garage, shed or under the kitchen sink, and they are easy to forget until packing day. Go through these spaces a month before you move. Gather half-used tins of paint, old fuel cans, weed killer, barbecue gas and cleaning products in one place, then decide what to use up, give away or take to your local recycling centre. Check your council’s website first, as each site has its own rules on what it accepts.
Pets and Plants
Removal companies do not carry pets. A closed vehicle is noisy, hot or cold and has no airflow suitable for animals. Plan for pets to travel with you, stay with friends or go to a kennel or cattery for the day.
Plants are a grey area. Some movers will take them on short local moves, but many refuse them on long journeys because they can be damaged, spill soil or bring in pests. Ask your mover, and consider giving away large pots before the move.
Food and Perishables
Frozen and chilled food is unlikely to survive a move, and open packets can attract pests or spill. Plan meals to run down the freezer and cupboards in the final weeks. Unopened tins and dry goods can usually be packed in sealed boxes.
Items That Need Special Arrangements
Some items are not refused but need planning before the day:
- Lawnmowers and garden machinery: drain fuel and oil first.
- Fridges and freezers: empty and defrost them before moving day.
- Washing machines: drain them and fit transit bolts to protect the drum.
- Pianos, safes and very heavy items: mention them at the survey so the right team and equipment are planned.
For awkward rather than prohibited items, see what professional movers hate to move the most.
Storage Has Its Own Rules
If some of your belongings are going into storage, the list of prohibited items is usually similar, and often stricter for food, plants and anything that could attract pests or create damp.
Our guide on how to pack for storage explains what to avoid.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What can’t removal companies move?

3. Can I pack paint for a move?
Most removal companies will not carry paint. Use it up, give it away or take it to a recycling centre that accepts it.
4. Should jewellery go on the removal vehicle?
